This week we learned that twins were delivered in China that had been genetically modified to be immune to HIV.... but the headline should have said welcome to the age of human-directed evolution.
In sci-fi like star trek the modified humans were dangerous and a threat... but that ignores one big glaring problem... once the genie is out of its bottle, it can NEVER go back...and it will only grow. because we multiply rapidly..... and this will become part of the human gene pool and spread far beyond China.
IF done correctly, it will be a lifesaver and a game changer.... or it could unleash a genetic disorder that will one day wipe out humanity. but, I am an optimist.... and I ask, why stop with immunity to HIV? why not extend lifespan.... we have doubled, tripled other animals lifespan... why not intelligence? endurance, strength?
we are destroying the planet...and the truth is we may need to modify ourselves to survive in a toxic environment. and this is just the beginning..... the next step is coming. we can either be like an ostrich with its head in the sand and ban this.or we can get on the ground floor and build the science.
I studied biology, chemistry and quantum mechanics, physics.... science is a tool to help mankind. and this is the new frontier.our great grandchildren will be genetically modified....with or without our countries help.
But can you imagine a world filled with einsteins? nicola teslas? how quick would they change this world? how different would it be in ten, twenty years?
